Meet the Maker: Rachel from Handmadeu

Hi Friends! How is your March going? I have no idea where ours has gone but I am excited about nicer weather. One fun thing that has been fun is we have been visiting a small local zoo called Reptileland near us on our days off. I am also excited to introduce you to our next maker. So without further ado let's "Meet the maker".

For this edition of Meet the Maker, we interviewed Rachel from Handmadeu.

Where are you from? and Where do you live now?
I grew up in Lincoln, NE, moved away after college to Chicago and Denver, and moved back to NE 14 yrs later, live outside of Lincoln now.
How long have you been crafting?
All my life.
Are there other types of crafting that you enjoy doing?
I haven’t met a craft I haven’t liked, maybe one I’m not so hot at but I like to try everything once! That is so fun.
What drew you to sewing or what inspired you?
Sewing was always a part of our family and I grew up with thinking you made things. Both grandmas and my mom always were sewing something from clothes, blankets, quilts, stuffed toys, etc. What a fun legacy.
Is there a story behind your shop name and if so what is it?
Handmade U was originally my creative retreat name, like Handmade University, and it’s just become an all-encompassing brand.  Since I dabble in all kinds of crafts and art the common denominator is that it’s all Handmade and able to be taught to others. I am glad you've been able to encompass all your craftiness in one location.

When did you start selling online?
Maybe in 2012 or so?
What drew you to sell online?
Connecting to a larger audience is appealing, to find those people who are “your” people is fun to do online especially now. That's great that is fun for you.

Where do you sell online?
On my IG store page @handmadeu_shop and sometimes my Etsy (hopefully more often soon) “shopHandmadeu
Do you sell in other venues and if so what are they?
At my retreats
What is your favorite venue for selling?
Online.
Cool.

Do you have any giveaways or sales coming up or other exciting things that you would like to be shared in your post?
Always have things- HandmadeAndTrade new round, the HandmadeU Maker Box, hopefully, an upcoming The Maker U online magazine one day, and our HandmadeAndTrade online sale in April. Yes, you always do seem to have something going.

Do you do any other work? Outside job, blog... How does that fit into your production time?
Typically I’d do a retreat once or twice a year, the magazine hoping for twice a year, maybe once, I do help with a few odd things for my husband’s firm, and I’m a mom to a 19mo old.  I “retired” from my career to focus on starting a family maybe 4 years ago.  I have small slivers of “production time” now with a little one. That makes sense.

Do you do your creating alone or with a partner or family member?
Alone, tho my daughter Pippa Pearl is my inspiration for our new hair bow and planner clip bows. They are super adorable by the way.

Do you have a faith practice and how does this fit into your work?
We used to go to church every Sunday, now with COVID, we try to watch Mass each Sunday morning. I am so glad that they can offer it online.

What hopes do you have for your business in the future?
Continue to grow and inspire other Makers to follow the path that works for them and their families at any given stage in life. You truly are an inspiration friend. Thanks for all you do for the maker community.

What is your most favorite piece that you have made?
I love the flannel vintage children’s fabric quilt top I made and my mom long arm quilted.  Mainly because that meant I had a daughter to give it to finally, and I love vintage fabrics and flannel and quilts! What a blessing in so many ways.

Do you give to charity from the proceeds of your pieces? If so which ones and is there a story behind why? What lead you to donate?
I offer items to Ashes for Aspen and their auctions, I saw their call for items and their story compelled me to help.  I also offer items to friends causes that come up, a good friend’s son has T1Diabetes and I helped with items for her auction, etc. Thanks for giving back in these wonderful ways.

What is one thing you would love to share with others who are considering going into the handmade business?
Don’t compare your business with anyone else’s.  Everyone is at a different stage in life which has a big impact on what you’re able to do.  Just keep moving forward and things will grow, might be slower than you’d like but keep at it! This is great advice, thanks for the reminder.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the blogosphere?
Share your stories, you never know when it’ll have an important impact on someone else that needs to hear it. This is so true. Thank you Rachel for joining us and sharing your story.

Stay tuned we hope to do a video interview with Rachel sometime in the near future. In the meantime you can find Rachel online at the following locations:

There is still time to join the next round of the #handmadeandtrade group that Rachel leads. Message her on Instagram for more information.

Thank you for joining us in our Meet the Maker series. Are you a maker who would like to be interviewed? Send me an email and we can make that happen. Until next time... get out there and be creative in any way you can, it's good for the soul.

Meet the Maker: Meredith from Pocket of Grace

Hi, friends! How are you? We are hanging in there, dealing with snow days, virtual school, and life. I must be honest but I am looking forward to spring. How about you?

I am excited to introduce you to our next maker in our Meet the Maker series. SO without further ado let's get to the interview.

Meet Meredith Pavey from Pocket of Grace photography.

Where are you from? Where do you live now?

Well, I'm an Air Force "brat" so home was all over the world, but I've always said I'm from Alabama. I live in a sweet, little, Mayberry city called Helena in Alabama.
How long have you been crafting?

I'm not your typical crafter, though I do love crafting. I'm an Alphabet letter photographer. I find "letters" out in nature.

Are there other types of crafting that you enjoy doing?

I love anything that's a little messy as it makes me really dig in and find the beauty of the project. So, something like a painting would be a good example. But I also really enjoy making collages. It allows me to express how I'm feeling and set in stone a moment in time. (I did A LOT of collaging during 2020. It really helped me process everything.)

What drew you to alphabet photography or what inspired you?

God. He put the desire in my heart a really long time ago. I remember thinking as a little girl that someday, Lord willing, I'd have my own business where I could pursue photography full time.
I'm inspired by the world around me! I see letters EVERYWHERE!

Is there a story behind your shop name and if so what is it?

Yes! When I was in junior high, I started reading The Christy Miller series by Robin Jones Gunn. She often refers to the concept: "pockets of grace". I felt the Holy Spirit lead me to ask her if I could use that concept one day for my photography business. She said "yes"!

Fast forward 26 years or so when God's blessed me with the opportunity to pursue photography full time and God reminds me that I need to call it: Pockets of Grace Photography. I love it! It perfectly describes what He's done and will do in my life and business.

"Pockets of Grace" is an unexplainable blessing or circumstance in which God directs your path in ways you never dreamed or imagined.
Do you have any giveaways or sales coming up or other exciting things that you would like to be shared in your post?

I'm working on a new project called: Pocket of Joys. (I enjoy keeping "pocket" as apart of my branding.) I just created an IG page: @pocketofjoys but I haven't posted anything yet. I've been consumed with creating content for IG for 2021 and Jane.com as well. In time, once I have the project created, I hope to create an additional Etsy page for this new venture. I look forward to checking this out in the future.

Do you do your creating alone or with a partner or family member?

More often than not, I'm with someone else when I stumble upon letters out in the wild. I enjoy it when my husband's with me. He has a unique eye and always helps me look at architecture just a bit differently. That is so fun.
What hopes do you have for your business in the future?

I would love:
1. For POG (Pocket of Grace Photography) to become a household name. When someone wants a unique and original piece of artwork for their friends and/or family, I want them to think of me.
2. To bring in a steady paycheck each month. The revenue from my business funds my family's dreams. (Fun fact: my husband said as soon as I have two months of steady income, we can go back to Disney World. We LOVE Disney!! It's a fun motivator.)
3. For Chip and Joanna Gaines to have my artwork in their home. (Lofty goals!) This would be really cool.
4. To create and grow friendships I've made from my followers (who are amazing)!
What is your most favorite piece that you have made?

L - "Purpose" - This little gem is one of my original letters; the start of something brave. I found it while wandering around my Mom's amazing garden. I realized the lawn chair’s edge made an "L".  Every time I see it, I’m reminded that God has a purpose for everything. Even when nothing makes sense, He’s got huge plans! I hold tight to Jeremiah 29:11-13, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” This is such a great reminder.

What is one thing you would love to share with others who are considering going into the handmade business?

It's the hardest and most rewarding job! Be prepared to dig in to make your dreams a reality! This is so true.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the blogosphere?

Sure! Follow @pocketofgracephotography, Encourage me and Support my dreams! We can do that.

Meredith has been selling online since 2016. She finds it to be the perfect medium for her because "As an introvert, the likelihood I'm going to stand on the street corner and peddle my business just isn't going to happen. ;) Next best thing, the Internet! :) "
She sells on ETSY and Jane. ETSY being her favorite. She had hoped to expand out into craft fairs but then COVID hit, we will see what the future holds for Meredith.

You can find Meredith online at the following locations:

I hope you are enjoying our Meet the Maker series. If you are an artist and would like an interview. Please contact me at mtnittanycreations@gmail.com Have a blessed day.

Meet the Maker is back and it's better! We are offering online interviews now.

Hi Friends! How are you? Sorry that it has been another stretch of time since my last blog post. All that is happening in the world has me pretty unmotivated beyond trying to take care of my family and survive. But I really want to help my maker friends out.  So here I am trying to do maker interviews again. And now we will be offering a vlog interview as well!!!! I am so excited about this because it allows you the artist to shine and share your products.

To start off our return to this blog series I interviewed my sweet friend Tricia from Pink Poodle Jewelry Studio. So without further ado let's get on with the blog and meet this week's maker!

Tricia has been all over the place with her husband for his work but she grew up in Pa and is back living just outside Williamsport. She has been crafting all her life. But it wasn't until her life long friend Gloria started teaching her how to make jewelry as a way of crafting while still sitting on the couch due to her chronic illness. It was here that she found her passion. She loves anything pink and the more sparkly the best. She also loves her two sweet dogs and those who have crossed the rainbow bridge. Hence the name Pink Poodle Studio.

Tricia can make all sorts of beautiful jewelry but her most favorite are her statement pieces. They truly are gorgeously made with a mix of materials. To learn more about Tricia and her jewelry make sure you check out our vlog

I do offer product reviews as well the only cost for these is a sample of your product and your time for the interview. My heart's desire is to try and share small shops so that those around the world can shop from you. We are all in this together... Stay safe and blessings.
