First Day of School!

Dear friends,
How are you? How was your summer? I can't believe how fast it has flown. The kids are back to school. We have two at a charter middle school, one in a special ed class in Kindergarten and I am homeschooling one at home. Needless to say, we are busy.  What is new with you? Are your kids back to school yet? Did you take any fun vacations? Leave a comment below I would love to hear from you.

In addition to this great sale, we continue to sell our jewelry at Revived and Company in Clearfield, PA. Just today we set up shop in a Salon in town J. Rose and Company.  We would love it if you could come by and check it out. These places are really neat and we feel so honored to be a part of it.

I would love to get back into blogging about Makers and all that's happening in the Maker world. We will see as time goes on if I can balance the biz, homeschooling, and three kids in two different schools, helping the hubby with our ministry and ministering at church. Meet the Blogger: Tia Mckenzie from Lady Stitch Has a Glitch.

Hi Friends!

How are you? How is your summer going? Ours has been pretty busy. The three older kids have all attended camp, as a family, we went to a conference in June, we finished up school, have gone to the pool, two of our kids participated in the kids day of Arts Fest just today. I have been running around trying to figure out where to send our youngest to school next year. Just this week we finally have that figured out for the most part. I got to be at a craft show a few weeks ago. My shop Mt Nittany Creations has been in several giveaways online. I have been selling my wares in a shop in Clearfield for the last several months and have an opportunity in August to be an artist in a Pop-up shop and go to Bead Fest in Philly. I am so excited about this opportunity. I also have started being a distributor for Young Living Oils. Needless to say, life has been full. Hence I have been kind of absent on my blog. I am sorry for that because I love the opportunity to introduce you all to some really neat people.

So for today's Meet the Maker we actually have a blogger, who similarly to me is trying to support small shops. So I am going to allow her to take over my blog and tell you about herself. Without further ado, let's meet Tia.

Hi! I am Tia. I am 27. I grew up in Arizona, but my home is now in Northern Idaho. I am a mom of three. Two stepdaughters and one son. Ages 12, 9 and 2.

I don't do crafting anymore (at least not to sell!) I am strictly a review / general life blogger. I started blogging as an outlet. My friends and I are all grown up now with children of our own so when I didn't see much of my closest friends anymore, at the time I was a stay at home mom I didn't get much social interaction with anyone. So I created working through life's glitches.

I was having the hardest time writing without sounding winey. I mean my days were pretty routine. I was dealing with a teething baby and my fiance was working full time and in school full time. After talking with my sister (who is a review blogger as well) she got me started on reviews. I thought this is an excellent way to help other companies out to get their names out there and it gives me a subject to write on. Plus I get to work my daily life into it! So it began.

Now I work full time, mom full time and blog almost full time. It works, I get to be creative, I get to help other companies, and I get to experience what is out there for small companies.

Meet the Maker: Kelly-Ann from Kelly-Ann Satra Jewelry

Hi friends! How are you? How is your spring going? We just finished up our homeschooling year and in a month our kids that go to school will be home and the summer will begin. I am looking forward to warmer weather and all the fun summer brings. What are you looking forward to this spring and summer?

Hi, I am Kelly-Ann and I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts.
I’ve lived in Georgia for almost 17 years now.
I’ve been crafting for almost 5 years.
I was drawn to jewelry making out of boredom.  One day I decided I needed something to do, in my search I came across a free jewelry making class at Michael’s. Leaving that first class, I knew I was hooked.

The name of my shop name is my actually my full name, Kelly-Ann Satra. I chose to use my name because I’m true to myself, I love and enjoy the simple, little things in life. I felt confident that I could and would create great work. I also knew that whatever I created would be a reflection of who I am.  I wanted my name to stand behind my work.

I started selling on online in 2015 and I recently launched my own website kellyannsatra.com back in October.
The reason I started selling online was after my husband asked me “so what are you going to do with all this? “

All my jewelry pieces are made by myself…I roll solo.
I would have to say my copper earrings are my favorite pieces, I have kept a few pieces for myself. They’re my favorites because they’re not perfect, they’re all different in some way.  Yet they’re beautiful.

I would encourage anyone who wants to enter the handmade business to have passion, courage, and patience.  Passion because you have to love what you do, 24/7. Courage. Because you will have to be bold and let yourself shine. You must be able to sell yourself, your product, believe in yourself and your product. Patience. Because success doesn’t happen overnight.  Everything takes time. Things have a way of falling into place.

Meet the Maker: Jen Buchanan from B Kind Apothecary

Hi friends. How are you? How were your Easter and spring so far? We have had some nice days followed by snow... I am ready for more nice days. But I guess that is how it goes in Central PA. We are longing for winter to end.  Our one daughter has started a new school. It is a non-traditional Charter school and she is really liking it. I am so glad because we did not make this decision lightly. One of her classes is stain glass. I wish I could have had art classes like that.

It is time for another edition in our Meet the Maker series. Today's interview is with Jen from B Kind Apothecary. So without further ado let us meet Jen.

Hi Jen.
Where are you from? and Where do you live now?
Ohio for both!

How long have you been crafting?
As long as I can remember.
Are there other types of crafting that you enjoy doing?
Crochet, mosaic tile work, pint, drawing and everything else possible from paper mache to typewriter poems!

What drew you to make Kawaii Bath & Body Cruelty-Free Goats Milk Handmade Soaps Clean Living Solutions?
Wanting to find a non-toxic solution for products that have chemicals and toxic ingredients.

Is there a story behind your shop name and if so what is it?
B is the first letter of my last name and be kind is my motto. I believe in karma so I only want to put Good Karma out there if possible. Apothecary comes from the idea of providing products that help with everyday life and sometimes with healing from pain.

When did you start selling online?
2017
and What drew you to sell online?
Finding people who would be interested in my products more easily than going to shows where people are into other things. It's an easier way to find the Right audience.

Where do you sell online?
Etsy and through Instagram with using PayPal.

Do you sell in other venues and if so what are they?
I haven't done a show in almost a year, but I used to do about four shows per year. 
What is your favorite venue for selling?
Online because I can reach a wider audience. My favorite is Instagram. I have met so many amazing people on Instagram and it has opened up my business world in the last year.
I really love Instagram too. There are some really neat people on there. 

Do you do any other work? Outside job, blog... How does that fit into your production time?
I have just written the first blog post for a little website, it's very new. And I'm looking for a new outside job. I am moderately busy but I squeeze it in time to craft even when I work full time.
That's great. Hope it goes well looking for a new outside job.

Do you do your creating alone or with a partner or family member?
I started this process with my sister but as she has had other things to focus on I've tried to keep the momentum going. It's not something I can very easily walk away from, because I am passionate about what I make.
That is great you are so passionate about it. 

Do you have a faith practice and how does this fit into your work?
I do have a faith practice. I tried to bring as much love and light as possible into the world. Started by going to church around third grade and loved it and was very passionate. I went on a missions trip that changed my life in 2002 and now my faith is still strong but I don't always go into a church building to practice anymore.

What hopes do you have for your business in the future?
I hope to continue to see growth in myself which leads to growth in the business. I enjoy doing research to figure out what needs to be made to help me be more sustainable and less toxic.

What is your most favorite piece that you have made?
I always feel a special attachment to my beeswax candles, they take on a life of their own as I hand pour them and decorate them. But I don't make anything I'm not willing to use myself, or that I'm not already using myself.

Do you give to charity from the proceeds of your pieces? If so which ones and is there a story behind why? What lead you to donate?
I participated in an auction in which the proceeds went to Mexico after their earthquake.

What is one thing you would love to share with others who are considering going into the handmade business?
Work on what you're passionate about because then you're always motivated.

I'm very thankful and grateful for everything that happens in life, and that I've experienced.
